Interview:
- Q. So how did it all begin?
A. Cliché as I’m sure it is, but with my parents. They both love music, taking me to festivals and gigs as early as 4 or 5. One of my earliest memories is of my Dad taking me down the front at Reading one year for Slipknot, was some scary shit, not going to lie haha. But yeah they have always supported me through everything and they never complained when I used to hook up whatever I could get my hands on bass amps, gaming chairs, old speakers and pretty much anything with a sub in it and just blast out tunes as loud as I could. My dads dub and reggae collection definitely had a massive influence on me growing up. - Q. What’s been the biggest source of inspiration?
A. I remember one day in my cousins bedroom probably about 6 or 7 years ago, he had this sick set up in his room and he played me The Bug – Stampin and Warrior Queen and I think Mala – Bury Da Bwoy. That Mala tune is probably one of my favourites of all time but Stampin was the first time I’d ever heard anything like it, I was listening to drum and bass for years before it, but just that ruthless bass line, Flowdan doing Flowdan and just the brutality of The Bugs production was something totally new to me. I remember getting home later and going onto the little synthesiser that I had and just trying to replicate that feeling but failing miserably. In those few weeks I made my first attempt at a dubstep track and from there I just carried on. - Q. What other producers do you rate at the moment?
A. Trisicloplox, Oxossi, Content, Foamplate, Fill Spectre, Eva 808, Djoser, Sirius, Headland, Jonah Freed, Hebbe, Phil Clinton, Mesck, Malleus, Las, Gantz, Commodo, Karma, Kahn, Sleeper, Boofy, Piezo… - Q. How do you see the dubstep scene moving forward, even with some still trying to claim it’s dead?
A. People who say it’s dead are just trying to cause all this fuss for publicity, unless they really are that detached from it. At the moment the scene is full of producers trying to make their own thing happen and if anything I’d say it’s more alive than any other scene going on at the moment. If you know, you know.
- Q. Where do you see yourself in 2 years time?
A. Honestly I don’t know, I’m starting to get a little recognition for a couple of tracks, had Kaiju like one of them the other day and that was definitely a high point haha, but yeah I really have no idea what is going to happen between then and now. Hopefully playing a few shows and making as much music as possible.
- Q. 5 Favourite tracks of all time?
A. Alicia by Mala is definitely up there, Anti-War Dub for sure as well, I’m Alright by Keith Hudson and King Tubby, so many Burial ones to choose from and recently Kaiju – Justice. Although at the moment I’m rinsing a dub Jonah Freed has sent over, seriously that guys production is impeccable, if you haven’t already check him out. - Q. If you could meet any DJ/Producer, who would it be and why?
A. Burial, because he makes tunes like no one else does. - Q. Most memorable set/night/festival?
A. Redlight at Boomtown 2013 was unbelievable, he dropped Loefah – Western out of nowhere and everyone in the tent just looked at each other, that moment was pretty special. I don’t really rate his production but that night his selection was perfect, I don’t think I’ll forget that set. Others that stand out were Mala at Koko last year, Congo Natty at Broken Dub House a few months back was heavy, everyone was on a good vibe and RC1 never disappoints, Ruckspin and Gantz in room 2 at the Outlook Launch Party last year was a big one.
- Q. What’s next for Samba?
A. I have a couple of releases lined up on various labels, I’ve recently finished a collaboration with Trisicloplox and I think we’re going to work on a few more together as well. Other collaborations with Hebbe and Phil Clinton are in the pipeline. Also I’ve got a mix coming up for Playhous.net and I’m really looking forward to that one, been swapping loads of dubs recently with some great producers, definitely look out for it.
